Subaru of America, Inc. has officially announced pricing and specifications for the 2027 Subaru Outback lineup. Headlining the release is the introduction of a new entry-level trim starting at an MSRP of $32,995, effectively lowering the entry price point for the Outback family by $2,000 compared to the 2026 model year. Across most carryover trims, Subaru has reduced MSRP figures by an average of $1,000, presenting a notable realignment in the midsize crossover and wagon market.

The return of an entry-level grade aims directly at cost-conscious families seeking standard all-wheel drive, spacious accommodations, and up-to-date driver assistance technologies. Despite its introductory positioning, the base 2027 Outback does not sacrifice interior equipment, coming standard with dual digital displays and Subaru's primary active safety systems. The complete vehicle lineup is scheduled to arrive at retailers nationwide later this year.

Exterior Styling, Platform & Dimensions

The 2027 Subaru Outback maintains its rugged, versatile silhouette while introducing several practical exterior features as standard equipment. The base model rides on 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels finished in silver and fitted with all-season tires. Moving up through the range, the Limited trim receives 18-inch alloy wheels in a black finish, while the Touring features 18-inch machine-finished black alloy wheels. The Limited XT and Touring XT trims upgrade to 19-inch wheels. For rugged duties, the Outback Wilderness is fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels in a matte black finish wrapped in all-terrain tires.

Functional utility remains a core priority. The standard Outback delivers 8.7 inches of ground clearance, which expands to 9.5 inches on the off-road-oriented Wilderness model. The Wilderness also gains specialized exterior elements, including unique body cladding, an exclusive front grille, anodized copper exterior accents, and underbody protection. Every Outback incorporates raised, ladder-type roof rails that support an 800-pound static load capacity. At the rear, a power liftgate with memory height functionality is standard equipment across the board, and an easily removable rear trailer hitch bumper cover provides straightforward access to towing hardware.

Subaru offers an expanded color palette for 2027. Available finishes include Crystal Black Silica, Crimson Red Pearl, Deep Emerald Green Pearl, Ice Silver Metallic, Magnetite Gray Metallic, and River Rock Pearl. Three new shades join the lineup: Daybreak Blue Pearl, Sand Dune Pearl, and Snowfall White Silica. The Geyser Blue and Sand Dune Pearl paints are reserved exclusively for the Wilderness model.

Powertrain, Performance & Specifications

The 2027 Outback lineup offers two proven SUBARU BOXER four-cylinder engine options. The base, Premium, Limited, and Touring trims are powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine producing 180 horsepower. Stepping up to the Limited XT, Touring XT, or Wilderness introduces a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer unit generating 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Both powerplants pair strictly with a Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

All trims come equipped with X-MODE with Hill Descent Control, while the Outback Wilderness steps up to Dual-Mode X-MODE with dedicated Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings. The Wilderness also incorporates electronically controlled adaptive dampers to support handling across uneven surfaces. Properly equipped base models achieve a towing capacity of up to 2,700 pounds.

Cabin, Infotainment & Interior Technology

Subaru has upgraded the Outback interior architecture with standard dual high-resolution screens. Sitting directly ahead of the driver is a 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster. It offers multiple display modes, including traditional gauges, turn-by-turn navigation data, a dedicated EyeSight visualization screen, and an essential calm layout designed to minimize visual clutter. Center-stage multimedia duties are handled by a standard 12.1-inch Subaru Multimedia touchscreen featuring enhanced responsiveness and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Convenience and connectivity are emphasized through standard USB-A and USB-C ports in the front console, physical controls for the standard dual-zone automatic climate control, and a standard all-weather package that bundles heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors, and a windshield wiper de-icer. Seating materials vary by grade: the base model receives durable black Tricot cloth; Premium and Wilderness feature water-repellent StarTex upholstery; Limited steps up to leather with khaki stitching; and the Touring and upgraded Wilderness package offer premium Nappa leather upholstery with ventilated front seating.

Cargo space measures a practical 34.6 cubic feet behind the second-row seats. When the standard 60/40-split folding rear bench is folded forward, maximum utility expands to 80.5 cubic feet of total storage volume.

Trims, Safety Suite & Availability

The 2027 Outback portfolio spans seven distinct trim configurations: Base, Premium, Limited, Touring, Limited XT, Wilderness, and Touring XT. Assembled in Gunma, Japan, the models will be distributed to United States dealerships later this year. Destination and delivery adds $1,545 in most states, with variations applicable in select northeastern states and Alaska ($1,695).

Standard active safety centers on the EyeSight Driver-Assist Technology suite along with the DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System. Upper trims gain advanced semi-autonomous functions. For 2027, the Limited XT adds standard Highway Hands-Free Assist, Emergency Stop Assist with Safe Lane Selection, Highway Hands-Free Active Lane Change Assist, Pre-Curve Speed Control, and Automatic Resume Assist. These advanced technologies are also standard on Touring models and available on the Wilderness via an options package.

AkulRide Verdict

In a current automotive landscape marked by rising transaction prices, the 2027 Subaru Outback takes an uncommon and welcome step by lowering initial entry costs while boosting base content. Equipping the sub-$33,000 base trim with a 12.1-inch infotainment screen, a 12.3-inch digital cluster, all-weather comfort features, and standard EyeSight safety positions the Outback as an exceptionally strong value against both compact and midsize crossover alternatives.
