Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. has officially expanded its subcompact utility lineup in India with the launch of the XUV 3XO ZNG, its first mainstream factory-fitted CNG passenger vehicle. Arriving with a competitive starting price of Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the new model targets first-time SUV buyers and drivers seeking economical daily operating costs without surrendering performance, cargo room, or cabin amenities. The vehicle represents a strategic milestone for the automaker, which has built its brand image around rugged, powerful SUVs and is now leveraging that DNA in the alternative-fuel market.

The standard XUV 3XO platform has already demonstrated strong commercial momentum, achieving cumulative sales of over 2.5 lakh units in less than 2.5 years. According to Dr. Velusamy R, President of the Automotive Business at Mahindra, the ZNG variant was engineered around a 'Zero Compromise' philosophy, addressing typical CNG drawbacks such as reduced trunk capacity, diminished acceleration, and basic equipment levels. Bookings and customer deliveries for the new CNG lineup are scheduled to commence on October 20, 2026, with test drives beginning across authorized retail dealerships from October 15, 2026.

Exterior Styling, Platform, and Dimensions

Visually, the XUV 3XO ZNG retains the contemporary and bold design language of the standard XUV 3XO family, while adding distinctive styling cues across its higher trim grades. Depending on the variant selected, the exterior is distinguished by a body-coloured or gunmetal grey front grille, paired with a stylish dual-tone roof finish. The lighting setup varies through the lineup, moving from bi-halogen projector headlamps, LED signature lamps, and LED indicators in entry grades to full LED projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights, and an infinity LED tail lamp design on upper tiers.

Wheel choices are tailored specifically to each grade. The lower trims utilize R16 steel wheels with full wheel covers or styled black covers, while higher configurations receive R16 diamond-cut alloy wheels or painted black alloys. Roof rails, a rear roof spoiler, and a single-pane sunroof or expansive Skyroof are also integrated across the range. Rather than compromising luggage space by placing an intrusive tank across the cargo deck, Mahindra implemented an underfloor twin-cylinder packaging strategy. This layout leaves a flat loading floor, preserves 270 litres of usable boot space, and secures the spare wheel mounted underneath the vehicle chassis.

Powertrain, Performance, and Specifications

Under the hood, the XUV 3XO ZNG utilizes a 1.2-litre mStallion TCMPFi turbocharged engine engineered to deliver identical performance outputs whether operating in petrol or natural gas modes. Through calibrated turbocharging and ECU engine mapping, the powertrain produces a peak 82 kW of power and a category-leading 200 Nm of torque across both fuel options. This peak torque is available early between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm, establishing a strong advantage over naturally aspirated CNG alternatives. The vehicle accelerates from 0 to 60 km/h in 4.9 seconds and achieves 0 to 100 km/h in 11.8 seconds while running on CNG.

Efficiency remains a core highlight, with certified fuel consumption rated at 24.7 km/kg. The engine incorporates a segment-first 10-bar CNG injection pressure system to maintain throttle responsiveness and efficiency. Seamless multi-fuel management enables easy switching between CNG and petrol modes, including an automatic handover to gasoline if CNG pressure is exhausted. Refueling is supported by an NGV fast-filling valve, and the digital display cluster presents both instantaneous and average fuel economy readouts to track consumption in real time.

Cabin, Infotainment, and Interior Technology

Mahindra has equipped the XUV 3XO ZNG with high levels of standard convenience gear, steering clear of stripped-out cabin treatments often seen in entry CNG vehicles. Even the base MX EDGE trim features a 26.03 cm high-definition central touchscreen infotainment system, supporting wireless Android Auto and wired Apple CarPlay, along with a four-speaker audio setup, steering-mounted controls, rear AC vents, and a 60:40 split-folding rear bench. Additional conveniences include front and rear power windows, remote keyless entry, front and rear USB-C connectivity, and cruise control.

Stepping up into the premium variants yields an enriched cabin environment featuring black leatherette upholstery, leather-wrapped steering and gear controls, dual-zone climate control, and a 65W fast-charging USB-C port. Audiophiles and tech enthusiasts gain twin 26.03 cm screens-comprising an HD infotainment unit and a digital instrument cluster-paired with AdrenoX Connect, built-in Alexa voice integration, online navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, an immersive Dolby Atmos audio layout, and a push-button start with passive keyless entry.

Trims, Safety Suite, and Availability

Structural integrity and safety equipment serve as foundational pillars for the ZNG lineup. Built on the 5-star Bharat-NCAP crash-test-rated platform of the XUV 3XO for both Adult and Child Occupant Protection, the CNG model comes standard with over 35 safety elements. Six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), ISOFIX child-seat anchors, rear parking sensors, three-point seatbelts for all passengers, and an integrated gas-leak detection system that automatically reverts the powertrain to petrol are standard across every trim.

The vehicle is marketed across four distinct variants: MX EDGE, REVX EDGE (O), AX5, and REVX A. The base MX EDGE starts at Rs 9.99 lakh, transitioning to the REVX EDGE (O) at Rs 10.79 lakh, the AX5 at Rs 11.19 lakh, and the flagship REVX A at Rs 12.27 lakh (all ex-showroom). Dealership order books and online bookings via auto.mahindra.com open concurrently on October 20, 2026, alongside initial customer deliveries.

AkulRide Verdict

The Mahindra XUV 3XO ZNG sets a new precedent in the Indian compact SUV category by proving that alternative-fuel economy does not require compromising on engine performance or interior technology. By matching its 82 kW power and class-leading 200 Nm torque output across both gasoline and natural gas modes, Mahindra directly addresses the traditional sluggishness associated with factory-fitted CNG kits. Combined with a 5-star Bharat-NCAP structural pedigree, underfloor twin-cylinder tank packaging that preserves 270 litres of usable trunk volume, and six airbags as standard, the XUV 3XO ZNG stands out as a highly compelling package for budget-minded and feature-focused drivers alike.
