New Kawasaki KLR650 DF ABS Gets Rugged Styling
The main addition for the 2027 model year is the Kawasaki KLR650 DF ABS. The DF stands for Durable Force and identifies a version that combines the established KLR650 mechanical package with a darker, more utilitarian appearance and additional standard equipment.
The motorcycle features Metallic Flat Raw Graystone bodywork, black-finished components and understated Kawasaki branding on the fuel tank shrouds. Its black details extend to components including the bolts, axle shafts, brake caliper bracket, rear suspension linkage arm and rear carrier.
Standard equipment includes hand guards, a large rear carrier and frame sliders. The frame sliders are designed to provide additional protection and are also available separately as Kawasaki Genuine Accessories for other KLR650 models.
The DF ABS retains the platform's adjustable windscreen, LED headlight, digital multifunction instrument panel and 6.1-gallon fuel tank. It is priced at $7,699 before destination charges, positioning it between the standard KLR650 ABS and the more extensively equipped Adventure ABS.
KLR650 S Offers a Lower Seat Height
The Kawasaki KLR650 S is designed for riders who prefer a lower seat height. It uses dedicated front and rear suspension settings, a lower seat, an optimised shifter-to-footpeg distance and a shorter side stand.
Its seat height is 32.1 inches, compared with 34.3 inches on the standard KLR650. The lowered suspension setup is intended to make it easier for riders to reach the ground while retaining the model's general handling and comfort characteristics.
Both the KLR650 S and the standard KLR650 are available with or without ABS. The non-ABS versions carry an MSRP of $6,999, while their ABS-equipped counterparts cost $7,299 before destination charges.
KLR650 Adventure ABS Adds Touring Equipment
The KLR650 Adventure ABS is the most extensively equipped touring-oriented version in the announced lineup. Factory-installed features include hard side cases, LED auxiliary lights, frame sliders, a tank pad, a DC power outlet, a USB socket and ABS.
The side cases provide additional luggage capacity for longer journeys, while the auxiliary lights offer additional illumination. The motorcycle also retains the standard platform's tall, two-position adjustable windscreen and large rear carrier.
Buyers can select Metallic Bluish Green for $8,199 or Cypher Camo Beige with Pearl Matte Sand Khaki for $8,299, before destination charges. The camouflage-colour version carries a $100 premium over the Metallic Bluish Green option.
652cc Engine and Chassis Specifications
All four KLR650 model families use a fuel-injected 652cc, four-stroke, four-valve, single-cylinder engine with a five-speed manual transmission and sealed-chain final drive. Kawasaki lists maximum output at 40 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 39.1 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm.
The engine's emphasis on accessible midrange performance supports a broad range of riding, from everyday travel and highway cruising to lower-speed off-road sections. Fuel injection is designed to support dependable operation in changing temperatures and at higher altitudes.
The motorcycle uses a high-tensile steel semi-double-cradle frame with an integrated rear frame. Suspension consists of a 41mm telescopic front fork and a Uni-Trak rear shock with adjustable rebound damping and spring preload on the standard configuration. The conventional KLR650 uses 7.9 inches of front suspension travel and 8.0 inches at the rear, while the KLR650 S has reduced travel to accommodate its lower seat height.
Braking hardware comprises a 300mm front disc and a 240mm rear disc, with a two-piston caliper at each end. ABS is standard on the ABS, S ABS, Adventure ABS and DF ABS configurations, while the standard KLR650 and KLR650 S are also available without the system.
Long-Distance Comfort and Practical Features
The KLR650 lineup retains features intended for extended journeys, including an upright riding position, rubber-mounted handlebars and footpegs, and rubber dampers beneath the seat to help reduce vibration. The two-position adjustable windscreen provides additional wind protection on the road.
A large 6.1-gallon fuel tank supports longer stretches between fuel stops. The digital multifunction instrument panel displays essential riding information, while the electrical system provides accessory capacity for additional touring equipment, depending on usage.
Kawasaki also offers Genuine Accessories for riders who want to customise their motorcycles. Available equipment includes additional luggage options such as a top case and side cases, as well as selected electrical accessories. Equipment that is not included as standard may add to the purchase cost.
